Merry Christmas from your friends at AtomicMods!

Unlike a lot of other retailers, we are keeping the trees, garland, mistletoe, and manger scenes and doing our best to offend as many anti-Christmas crusaders as possible. So from all of us here at AtomicMods, we wish you a double heaping of Merry Christmas with all the trimmings. And now for the shameless plug, which you knew was coming right. I mean c'mon, Rob is not only a radical right-wing Christmas lover, but a capitalist to boot. Anyway, back to the plug. We have 2,283 things you could buy for that special someone, but if you don't know a tie rod from a t-bone, you can always use our handy gift certificates. We now return you to our regular programming...

Tis the Season...

I love my job! Its very rewarding to be able to provide a good living for so many families while doing something we all love to do. I mean, how many of us can say we get paid to play. A big part of our job here is to play with cars, no really! We race them to learn the best way to tune and which parts work best. We break them to find the weaknesses, and we design new parts to make them better. We don't go to work, we go to "play".

However, we don't get to "play" as much this time of the year. December and January are the busiest two months of the year for us here at AtomicMods. And especially this year, as we are breaking all of our previous sales records, while bringing in still more products. We are working very hard to get your orders shipped out on time, but its not easy. In fact we just hired our eighth person; a Russian beauty (not pictured above) by the name of Tatiana to help with shipping. We normally ship all in-stock orders within one day (sometimes same day), until the weekend which we take off (we have to race sometime). When we return on Monday it is currently taking us until Tuesday or Wednesday to get all the weekend orders out, then we are back to same or next day shipping until the weekend comes again. Another big challenge is getting enough product to fill the demand, as many of our vendors simply cannot keep up. So please bear with us through this busy time. The volume of orders we are handling will cause unavoidable delays, so we ask for your patience through the holidays and thank you for your continued support.

Pro Pulse Mods!

The brand new Radio Shack Pro Pulse is here! And while they run pretty good stock, we couldn't help tinkering around with it. The Pro Pulse is very similar to an RC18T and can use many of its upgrade parts, such as batteries, wheels, tires, motors. We also robbed some shocks from the Mini-T. We suspect there are many more crossover parts to be discovered. So getting back to the article, here is what we did:

Upgrades
LRP 7.2V H-Volt Plus 6-Cell Pack
This is a great pack and the exact size needed, so it was an easy choice. The pack dropped right in and was held by the stock battery bar perfectly.

Mamba Competition X Package: 8000Kv
This is the highest RPM mamba system delivering 57,000 RPM at 7.2 volts. Normally we would not use this one, but we wanted to go as fast as possible with the low factory gearing. It too bolted right in and since the speed control is separate, everything just plugged in. We did use the Castle Link USB Programming Kit  to set it up because it is much easier than doing it from the radio.

Team Losi LOSB1110 Oil Filled Aluminum Shock Set
The stock springs are pretty springy and since we knew we would be going fast, we knew they wouldn't work. We had to use the stock Pro Pulse shock ends, but after threading those onto the new shock, they bolted right on and provided a much needed improvement in stability.

BSR Racing RC18T Wheels with Foam Tires (not on site yet)
Since we were running brushless, we wanted a tire that would not swell up too much and wack out the handling. The axle pins are a bit longer, so after lengthening the slots on the wheels, they bolted right on.

Handling
The handling was very stable and predictable. The foams broke loose quite a bit but the car still went straight even with the tires spinning like mad. We were all very impressed with the stability and predictability.

Speed
The car is geared pretty low presumably to keep the stock setup punchy, so this setup only netted us a top speed of 30MPH which we confirmed with our radar gun. Not bad, but we still want more! The Mamba is capable of much higher voltages, so we are going to build a special high voltage Lithium pack and play with taller gearing to see what we can get out of it. So stay tuned...

Cristian's Corner

Ok, so now I have a corner... And the trouble with having my own corner is I have to keep it orderly, and make generally good use of it, lest Rob take it away and leave me cornerless which I could not bear.

We use a lot of racing terms around here and often get asked about them, so in an effort to keep my corner cobweb free, I thought I would put together a glossary.

AMPS- Amperage:
The ampere, in practice often shortened to amp, (symbol: A) is a unit of electric current, or amount of electric charge per second. The ampere is named after André-Marie Ampère, a 17th century French dude who was one of the main discoverers of electromagnetism.

Armature:
The central part of an electric motor, usually carrying the windings and the commutators. The pinion gear) is usually attached to the armature shaft.

ATV or EPA:
Adjustable Travel Volume or End Point Adjustment features on better radio transmitters control the maximum travel of the servo on both sides of neutral position.

AWD:
All four wheels are powered by the motor through a drive train. The use of four wheel drive allows a car to obtain better traction and greatly improves handling.

BEC:
Battery Eliminator Circuitry; a circuit that eliminates the need for a separate receiver battery by using the battery pack that powers the vehicle also powers the servos.

BDC:
Abbreviation for Bottom Dead Center. When a piston is at the very bottom of it's stroke.

Brushless Motor:
A motor that has a rotating center permanent magnet & a fixed outer electromagnet driven by a special ESC that changes AC pulses to DC pulses.

2006 AtomicMods Race For Education
We are back from the 2006 AtomicMods Race For Education in Columbus Indiana. I can't help thinking how lame school was when I was a student, but Michael Riley has found a way to reduce the vacuum factor and we applaud his innovative approach to education.  Anyway, we had a killer time there and you can read about the entire event here.

Upcoming Racing Trips

Kyosho Mini-Z Cup

Our next event is the Kyosho Mini-Z Cup in Acapulco, Mexico. We will be taking the entire Racing team; Jacob Feinstein, Michael Feinstein, Cristian Tabush and Rob on this trip and expect everyone to come home with large trophies. That is everyone except Rob. The Micro-Ts are here and I couldn't wait to get my hands on one of them. They are surprisingly fast and quite powerful. In fact, they have enough juice to pull the front wheels off the ground with ease. They jump well and handle better than I expected. So far these have been the best selling product we have ever had in the store, so we plan to create lots of upgrades for them! I can't wait to get Lithium in one of these. Can you say "Micro-Missile?" - Rob

Mini-Z F-1 Supply Low

Kyosho 30501RB-B Mini-Z F1 ReadySet Ferrari F2005 No.2

You may have noticed that the prices went up on some of the Mini-Z F-1 ReadySets. This is because we are almost out of these and Kyosho has already sold out as well. So when our current stock is gone, its gone until Kyosho decides to make some more of them and that can be months or years as was the case last time. When supplies run low, many collectors will buy them and post them on e-bay for outrageous prices after everyone is sold out. I have seen these out of production kits going in the 200-$300 range. The price hike is our effort to discourage this and give everyone a chance to own one of these fantastic cars.

You will find them here.
