The Mini-Z MR-02 is a great all-around platform for racing 1:28 scale. Out of the box, it performs well. With a few basic upgrades, you can be competitive in the stock class at your local race track. We wanted to create a car that was competitive in the open class, while keeping upgrades to a minimum, and allowing you to get the most "bang" for your buck.

The Platform

We start off with a brand new, Mini-Z MR-02 ReadySet (make sure that you let us know which one you want, by choosing one from the available ReadySets listed in our ReadySets page). The ReadySet includes the fully functional car and remote and with the addition of our hop-ups you will only need 8 AA batteries and a Lithium Safe charger.

Power & Drivetrain

The first and biggest performance boost on the car is AtomicMods' very own Mini-Z Car Lithium Ion Pro 2S Pack. This battery pack packs some punch! It is much lighter than running 4 NiMH batteries while at the same time increasing your voltage from 4.8v to 7.4v. This gives you more power and a top speed of 20.6MPH (on the Tamiya Speed Checker) with the 6 tooth pinion, and is even faster with a taller gear.

We combine the battery pack with a PN Racing Speedy 07 motor. The reasons why we choose this specific motor are many, but most importantly this is one of the fastest available motors able to run on standard FETs. The car maintains a good balance of top speed and bottom end with the Speedy 07 while maintaining incredible drivability.

Lastly, we add a full set of AtomicMods Mini-Z Car Shielded Bearing Set to increase efficiency, top speed and smoothness of the car.

Suspension and Chassis

The single most important chassis modification you can do to a car is TIRES. Your car can be completely decked out, but if it doesn't have the correct tires on, it will simply do do-nuts on the track. For that reason, we install PN Racing RRR10 RCP Rear Radial tires coupled with GPM A Tread 8.5mm 25deg in the front. This tire combination provides the great balance needed to be fast on RCP tracks.

We finish off the suspension with a set of Atomic Mini-Z MR-02 Option Spring Set. We install the orange ones on your car, but provide with the blue ones as well for you to experiment under different track conditions. These springs are much stiffer than the stock ones and eliminate unwanted chassis roll at the front of the car.

Extra

Just to be cool, we throw in an Atomic Spring Loaded Antenna.

Drivability

This car is very fast! If driven with a steady throttle finger you should be able to compete in the modified class easily. Note that with all the power, the car is prone to chatter a bit due to the lack of dampening in the rear end. Add a disk damper set-up or a top oil shock to improve the cornering ability of the car.

The question is now, can you handle the power and raw speed this car is capable of? In any case, be sure to stock op on tires, because this baby will wear them out in very short order.
