Tutorial 1:28 XMODS Generation 1 Power Switch Bypass

The XMOD Generation 1 power switch is unreliable and very inefficient at passing current. We recommend bypassing it entirely. Many EPs will work intermittently and the power switch is often the culprit.

If you are putting stacked FETs onto your car you will no longer be able to use the stock power switch anyway, so you may as well bypass it to eliminate the power loss associated with it. Even a stock XMOD Gen1 will benefit from a switch bypass.

Required Items

  1. Side Cut Nippers

  2. Hobby Knife

  3. Solder

  4. Soldering Iron

Step 1

The first step is to get the MainBoard out and separated so that you can access the switch.

Step 2

Using Side Cut nippers, cut the Power Switch off away from the board. Cut from the part of the switch closest to the board. Don't let this step scare you, its really quite easy.

Step 3

Using an Exacto Knife, scrape a small amount of the green cladding from beside the second prong as indicated in the red circle. Consider the prong closest to the receiver board as prong number one. You can also identify the second prong as the only prong that is completely isolated (with dark green cladding) from the rest of the prongs.

Step 4

Using small amount of solder, solder the second prong to the small portion of the board that you have removed the cladding from. This solder bridge will take the place of the switch contact and provide much better performance and reliability.

Congratulations... You have just bypassed your power switch.

Warning

If you forget to unplug your XMOD and leave it overnight or longer you will likely ruin your batteries, so please don't forget to unplug your batteries after each use.
