AtomicMods.com Racing Club - Houston

1-30-2008 UPDATE:  Bad news!  No more racing...the track is indefinitely closed.

Looking for a place to race Mini-Zs in Houston Texas? AtomicMods.com maintains a state of the art test track for product development and testing as well as a practice facility for our world champion AtomicMods.com Racing Team. We have opened up this facility to the public and have began holding weekly racing. This is good for us as it gives our racing team more dynamic practice than we can get on our own, and its good for you because you get to learn from the world's best Mini-Z drivers who love to help people with car setups and driving pointers. So come race with us and be sure to bring a friend.

Schedule

We open the doors every Wednesday night at 5pm for some good old fashioned club racing. Practice is from 5:00pm till 6:45. The entry deadline for racing is 6:45pm and racing starts at 7:00pm so be there on time! We try our best to finish up by 10:00pm.

If you are running late, call us before 6:45pm so we can enter you into the system. Its OK, if you miss a qualifier or two, but if we don't get you in the system, you can't race at all.

We have our business cards at the track so be sure and grab one so you will have our contact information.

News & Events

The fall series is over, and the team is getting ready for the 1:18th Nationals so after we return from Portugal, we will be converting our track to a larger and wider 1:18th layout so we can practice with our 1:18th cars. So we will be running 1:18th scale format until further notice. If you have a 1:18th scale car, you are welcome to join us.

Note: You are welcome to bring your XMOD, but the Mini-Z has a large advantage due to their high precision so you will not be competitive against them. We are not opposed to starting an XMODS class, but after driving a Mini-Z most XMOD owners move up to the Mini-Z for racing and use the XMOD for bashing around the driveway and doing crazy mods.

Facilities

The racing is held at the lavish AtomicMods.com Test Track facilities. This place has every amenity you could imagine and will spoil you for sure. The pit area has spotless bathrooms and even a small kitchen with a fridge that you can stash your drinks in. We also sell water if you don't want to bother with bringing your own. There are lots of pit tables with power at every station. There also is an air compressor to blow the track dust off your cars. We even have music in the pits. The track is massive with a huge drivers stand that offers a commanding view of the track. There is seating around the track for spectators and we project the results up on the wall for racers and spectators to see what is happening real time. We even have a PA system for announcing the races and broadcasting the Giro-Z timing system alerts. You can see more of the AtomicMods.com Test Track here.

Timing System

For our race timing we use the current standard system for Mini-Scale racing, TRP’s Giro-Z. This is an infra-red technology based counter that is super precise and does not interfere with the signal of the cars. You will need to purchase a Giro-Z transponder to be able to participate in the races, since this is how we time the cars. We try to keep some at the track, but it is easier on us if you buy them from the site ahead of time. Don't worry about the channel, if you are in conflict with someone else, we will swap it out for you at the track with an open number.

Fees

Fees are simple, we charge a flat $10 to race or practice. Spectators pay nothing at all. We even have a car you can rent for $15 which is complete with basic upgrades suitable for the Stock (beginner class) and also has a Giro-Z Transponder so you can race with it. Water is also available for $1.

Visitors Welcome

As we said, its free to watch and we would love to see you there, Even if you don’t own a Mini-Z yet. You will find a great crowd that is always willing to share racing tips and car setups. Who knows, we might even manage to get you hooked! ;)

Race Results

These are the race results from the Giro-Z timing system which we post for the benefit of our racers. It is nice to be able to see how you are progressing by comparing your lap times with previous lap times on the same track.

This week Luis Diaz, who drives Lemans for the Lowes racing team, joined us. Luis is quite a celebrity on the racing scene, and also happens to be an AtomicMods.com customer who loves Mini-Z racing. He brought a few friends and participated in our regular club racing, and he is a really cool guy. Luis sent us a testimonial that you can read here.
